Yulefest VI: a Charity Fundraiser, December 14

Music at 7pm, $15 admission. Featuring Barra, The Hi-Bs and The Eddies

Three of St Paul's most beloved bands come together to spread holiday cheer and promote good will with great live music and a silent auction. Now in it's sixth year, Yulefest passes on all proceeds to The Emergency Foodshelf Network! Barra is one of Minnesota's longest-playing traditional Irish bands and a perpetual favorite at ceilis. They will certainly bring their signature mixture of tunes and songs. The Hi-Bs, Kate and Jode Dowling, are dazzling, dynamic instrumentalists who are long-time stalwarts of the local Irish music scene and not-to-be missed performers. The Eddies are a high energy vocal group who can not only sing the rafters down with rousing sea shanties, but will surprise you with a variety of songs of work, love and death sung in three and a half part harmony. Ann Heymann: Meet the Gaelic Harp, Nov 8

After two hundred years of silence, the famous harp of Ireland and Scotland is once again being heard and Minnesota is playing a key role in its revival. 

Gaelic harper Ann Heymann is a pioneer who recreated techniques documented in medieval manuscripts to recreate a performance practice that is the basis for courses in Ireland, Scotland and around the world. 

Ann and musical husband Charlie Heymann will give a series of five seminar-performances in the coming year at the Celtic Junction. These events, supported by a Minnesota State Arts Board “Arts Learning” grant, are free and open to the public. The first, "Meet the Gaelic Harp" will include an introduction to the instrument and an overview of its history and music. [More]

Skara Brae in Concert, October 27

Skara Brae, the legendary Irish vocal group, was formed in the 1960s by Dáithí Sproule and Maighread, Tríona and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill. Members of the group have gone on to form some of the world's best-known and best-loved Irish bands, including the Bothy Band, Altan, Bowhand, Trian, Touchstone, Nightnoise, Relativity, Coolfin, and T with the Maggies. POSTPONED Shakespeare: Voice & Speech Workshop, September 7/8

The Celtic Junction is hosting a Shakespeare/Voice and Speech Workshop on Saturday and Sunday 7/8 of September from 10.00 am -12.30 pm. This was created in response to the work done in the workshops that took place in June. They were successful and well attended and participants requested more work on voice production, text analysis and presentation. The workshop costs $50 and is suitable for all age groups from 9 years to adult. If you are interested in performing and would like to extend your skills in relation to Shakespeare and performing in a large space please join us. New dates to be determined.

Jack Klatt "Love Me Lonely" CD Release Concert, June 28

MIM Master Artists' Concert, June 15

The Master Concert is a signature event of the Minnesota Irish Music weekend. The concert not only showcases each visiting musician’s artistry and repertoire, but offers both classic and unique musical pairings. This year’s Master Concert will feature visiting artists Geraldine Cotter, Eamonn Cotter, Oisín McAuley, Eileen O'Brien, and Meaití Jó Shéamuis. The audience will be treated to the synchronicity of the Cotters’ duet, the legacy of the O’Brien’s repertoire, the distinctive vocal styling of Mattie Joe, and the genre-bending virtuosity of McAuley. Minnesota Irish Music Weekend, June 13-16

Presented by the Center for Irish Music, the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend is a unique festival that pairs world-class traditional Irish musicians and teachers with learners of all ages and abilities for a weekend of workshops, lectures, Friday night ceili, social community meals with sessions and a rare and virtuosic Saturday night concert featuring the visiting artists. This year's visiting artists are Geraldine Cotter, Eamonn Cotter, Oisín McAuley, Eileen O'Brien, and Meaití Jó Shéamuis.

Youth Acting Workshop, June 11-13

Internationally known acting teacher Julia Carey is working with Natalie O’Shea at the Celtic Junction to create an acting workshop for young people. Julia and Natalie were the creative partnership behind the critically acclaimed Theatre Exchange in Minneapolis from 1988 to 1992. They have subsequently worked together in New York and London and are looking forward to new collaborations in Minneapolis. [More]

Fearsome Critters Preview Concert, May 24th

See a live Squonk! (Please don’t stare.) Witness the world’s first trained Hoop Snake act! Shawn McBurnie & The Slight Exaggerations perform original songs featuring Fearsome Critters from Northwoods folklore. Tales of these colorful creatures traveled across the country, being swapped and embellished in logging, mining, or railroad bunkhouses; around trappers' fires; and anywhere frontier workers relaxed. Shawn and fellow musicians bring the critters to life in a variety of musical styles. The audience is invited to learn a bit about the menagerie and chime in on choruses - this is singable and family-friendly music, but by no means aimed solely at the younger set! Cape Breton Fiddle workshop with Andrea Beaton, April 29

Andrea Beaton will give a 3-hour workshop for intermediate/advanced fiddlers (you have to be able to play tunes; basic technique will not be covered) and players of other instruments. These workshops will introduce the participants to playing Cape Breton music, and will cover what makes Cape Breton music unique. [More]

Comas in Concert, April 14

Celtic Players: Scenes from Dracula's Celtic Album, April 6

8pm. Dublin-born author, Bram Stoker (1847-1912) penned the most famous vampire novel, Dracula (1897) and in this show, his infamous protagonist opens his own Celtic album and selects his favorite scenes from literature and culture with a Celtic twist: meet 'The Hawk' by Liam O'Flaherty; the vicious Judge in Stoker's "The Judge's House," a certain Scottish Thane and his ambitious wife, and others in another eclectic production by St. Paul's Celtic Players.
