Scottish Music Workshop by Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, July 8

Adults $40, Students/Seniors $30. Register at MN Scottish Fair.
Sessions are 11-12:15, 2:00-3:15, and 3:45- 5:00.

"You would think they'd been playing together for centuries. While his fiddle dances, her cello throbs darkly or plucks puckishly. Then she opens her cello's throat, joining Fraser in soaring sustains, windswept refrains, and sudden, jazzy explosions. Their sound is as urbane as a Manhattan midnight, and as wild as a Clackmannan winter." - Scott Alarik

Cellist Natalie Haas and Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser have toured as a duo for over 15 years, wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound. Their first album together, Fire & Grace, was awarded Best Album of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004.

The focus of the workshop will be learning tunes by ear, understanding and performing idiomatic bowing and ornamentation, hearing chord progressions, and creating rhythmic accompaniments. The expected outcome of the workshops is that participants will have heard Scottish traditional music played at the highest level, will understand and practice authentic performance techniques in the workshop setting, and will be able to play one or more tunes and a corresponding accompaniment.

There is an opportunity for participants to perform 1 or 2 tunes with Alasdair and Natalie on stage at the Scottish Fair on Saturday, July 9.
